"You've both made such a little go a very long way" -- which somebody actually once said to Neil and/or Chris -- is a rather nasty insult faintly disguised as a compliment. It suggests (incorrectly, of course) that the Boys have very little talent, but that they've been very skillful and successful at "stretching" what allegedly little talent they do have to maximize their success. It's almost as if they were implying that (to use a biblical metaphor) Chris and Neil had only two loaves of bread but had managed to feed five thousand with it. They made a little go a very long way. The insult is double-edged, suggesting not only that they aren't very talented but also that they don't really deserve their success.
